Set up email on a IONOS domain

IONOS hands out developer API keys to any account at developer.hosting.ionos.com, and one paste of the key lets Faivelo write every email record for you. The by-hand path through Domains & SSL is below, along with the IONOS mail records that need to go first.

One paste, then it does itself

  1. 1.

    Add your domain in Faivelo

  2. 2.

    Paste your IONOS API key

  3. 3.

    Records write and verify themselves

Sign in at developer.hosting.ionos.com with your normal IONOS login, open API Keys and create a key. IONOS shows it as a public prefix and a secret joined by a dot; copy the whole thing, dot included, because the secret half is shown only once. Paste it into Faivelo and every record below is written and verified for you.

Find the DNS editor

  1. 1Prefer to do it by hand? Sign in at my.ionos.com and open Domains & SSL.
  2. 2Click the gear symbol under Actions next to your domain and choose DNS.
  3. 3Click ADD RECORD, pick the type, fill in Host name and Points to for each entry your Faivelo dashboard lists, then Save.

Use @ in the Host name field for the root and bare prefixes like _dmarc for the rest; IONOS adds the domain itself.

What your screen should look like

DNS

MX@mx00.ionos.com10
MX@mx.faivelo.com10

ADD RECORD

The mx00 and mx01.ionos.com rows belong to IONOS mail. If they are tied to a mail product, IONOS refuses to delete them until that product is deactivated.

What gets set up, in plain words

Receiving

One record tells the internet to deliver your mail to Faivelo.

MX

Sending and trust

These prove your mail is really yours, so it lands in inboxes instead of spam folders.

TXT ×4CNAME ×3MX

Device auto-setup optional

Optional but nice: phones and mail apps find their settings by themselves instead of asking for servers and ports.

CNAME ×2SRV ×3

You type less than you think

Add your domain to Faivelo, free, and your dashboard generates this exact set for your domain. Every value has a one-click copy next to it, and each record checks itself off the moment it goes live, so you always know what is done and what is left.

And you give nothing up: this is the same full SPF, DKIM and DMARC setup the big per-seat providers configure. The flat price changes what you pay, not what lands in inboxes.

Things IONOS does differently

IONOS mail MX records come with the domain

Domains at IONOS usually carry MX records for mx00.ionos.com and mx01.ionos.com. Two MX sets means some mail lands in the wrong place, so remove them before adding yours. If a row belongs to an IONOS mail product, the editor will not delete it until that product is deactivated in your contract.

The key is two halves joined by a dot

IONOS shows the key as a public prefix, a dot, then a secret. Faivelo needs the whole string. Pasting only the prefix authenticates nothing, and the secret cannot be shown again.

Edits land at IONOS in seconds, the world catches up in an hour

IONOS says changes are effective immediately on its side and can take up to an hour elsewhere. A record showing as pending shortly after you add it is usually just a cache emptying.

Check that it worked

Records usually go live within minutes, though caches can hold old answers for up to a day. Faivelo re-checks your domain automatically and emails you the moment everything verifies. Want an instant answer? Run a free email checkup on your domain and see exactly which records are live.
